Citigroup breach exposed data on 210,000 customers
Citigroup admitted on Wednesday that an attack on its website allowed hackers to view customers' names, account numbers and contact information such as email addresses for about 210,000 of its cardholders. Citigroup did not say how the website, Citi Account Online -- which is used by its customers to manage their cards -- was compromised. The bank discovered the breach, which was first reported in Thursday's Financial Times, early last month. Read More

HP, Microsoft take joint aim at Oracle
Hewlett-Packard says that its customers run more Oracle databases and applications on HP hardware than any other vendor out there. But if you are at HP's big user conference this week and interested in talking to Oracle, you won't find the company listed as an exhibitor on the expo floor. But a couple of HP attendees did report seeing a truck with Oracle advertising on it outside the conference. Oracle is nonetheless on the agenda at the conference. On Wednesday, one conference session was titled "Oracle database migrations to Microsoft SQL Server with HP services." Read More

IBM brings high-performance computing to the cloud
IBM hopes to help companies more efficiently use their high-performance computing resources with new software that links separate pools of resources into a single private cloud. For many businesses, pooling together multiple high-performance computing systems can have benefits beyond the improved efficiencies that come from using otherwise idle resources. By combining all of a company's high-performance computing resources, individual engineering groups could have access to more cores and thus finish projects faster. Read More

4D introduces platform for building Web-based business apps
Development tools vendor 4D has introduced an open source, end-to-end JavaScript platform called Wakanda, which is intended to make it easier to build Web-based business applications. Now at a pre-launch stage, Wakanda is billed as a unified environment based on JavaScript. Read More

Java SE 7 gets thumbs-up from standards committee
The next edition of Java has been approved by a Java Community Process executive committee, but not without some acrimony. Java Platform, SE (Standard Edition) 7 has been passed this week by the JCP Executive Committee for SE/EE (Enterprise Edition), by a vote of 13 in favor and 1 -- Google -- against. Oracle, IBM, VMware, Red Hat, and Fujitsu are among the affirmative votes, and two committee members -- Credit Suisse and Java architect Werner Keil -- did not vote. Read More
