No big updates this week - for once - just some good news for our Canadian customers!

The Canadian Postal strike has finally ended and mail service in Canada has resumed
as of this past Tuesday. On our end, the US Postal Service has announced:
Canadian Postal Employees Return-To- Work Tonight - USPS To Begin Accepting Mail
Destined For Canada. The Canadian government passed back-to-work legislation Sunday
night. Canadian Postal employees will return to work beginning June 27 at 8:30 p.m.
USPS will begin accepting mail for Canada starting June 28. Mail held in the USPS
network since the work stoppage began is being released and transported into Canada.
Due to the large volumes of mail held by countries, customers may experience slightly
longer transit times. USPS is working closely with the Canadian Postal Service to
hold delays to a minimum.
This is definitely good news. Everyone should just keep in mind that the folks here
at USPS have been letting Canadian mail accumulate in trailers for about 3 weeks,
so I'm sure all Canadian mail shipments will see pretty long delivery delays until
Canadian post can work through that huge backlog. Everyone should just expect Canadian
mail delivery times to be much longer than normal for the next few weeks.

I also wanted to mention that we got a surprise shipment of some of those final
TokyoPop editions that we had ordered but didn't expect to be shipped. These were
the volumes that were at the presser when TokyoPop announced they were going out
of business, and as such only a few retailers seem to have gotten them. Check our

Media Blasters Picks Up Both Seasons of Bakuman

Media Blasters has announced that it has acquired BOTH seasons of the Bakuman TV
anime series, and will begin releasing it under their AnimeWorks label this November.
The first DVD will contain Eps #1-7 and will have an English dub.
The second season is scheduled to begin airing in Japan this fall. The new season
was first announced in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine last December.
Synopsis: Moritaka Mashiro, a junior high school student, content to live out a
relatively normal life as any other does, is persuaded by his classmate, Akito Takagi,
to become an aspiring mangaka when the latter realizes his natural talent as an
artist. However, Moritaka is reluctant to pursue his dream as his uncle, once a
mangaka with his own serializations, died from overwork trying to regain his lost
status. With Akito's help, Takagi gets another classmate and his school crush, Azuki
Miho, who is an aspiring voice actress, to voice in the anime adaptation of their
future manga once it is completed. However, Mashiro also proposes to Azuki, who
surprisingly accepts only on the condition she will marry him when both of them
have achieved their dreams. With a goal set before him, Mashiro begins a long and
struggling path to become a famous mangaka.

One of the biggest problems that we've experienced as a dedicated Anime retailer
during the economic downturn is that everyone is now sitting on loads of unused
capacity due to the massive capital investments we all had to make to keep up with
the boom from 2002-2006. Since 2007 aggregate demand for Anime products in R1 has
fallen probably around 75% from the peak, and though we've all been on a 'shrink
to fit as needed' program over the last few years, there is only so far that can
go. Sal's videos explain perfectly why Anime prices continue to drop, and returns
on investment in our industry have remained so anemic (or even negative) for going
on 4 years. And this applies at both the retail and the studio production levels,
so while your watching the videos you can easily have fun pretending that the 3
cupcake businesses are RACS, Nation, and Brand X or Funimation, Section 23, and
Media Blasters, etc etc. When folks tell me they are unhappy that more Anime series
are not being picked up and released, they probably are not realizing that it's
because the industry's capacity utilization is already so low because aggregate
demand is low causing prices to decrease because everyone is having such a hard
time selling what they already have - and thus everyone's return on assets remains
very low removing the incentive to produce more. It's not like the industry has
attracted much new capital investment over the last 3 or 4 years, and this is precisely
why a company like Funimation, the clear leader on the production side, could not

their business. When looked at from a 'return on assets' point of view, Anime is
just not such a great way to invest capital these days - unless (I suppose) you
are already deeply invested in the industry. Even then, we are seeing long time
players (think Stew Levy at TokyoPop) just walk away and liquidate rather than
continue to try to shore things up until they get better. Some folks are in a position
to wait longer than others for a 'recovery', though I think most everyone still
around has come to the conclusion that this is just new normal, and what we need
to decide is if we are either going to be able to live with it or not.

Christopher Ayres posted on his Facebook account yesterday that fellow Funimation
voice cast member Cassandra Hodges has passed away. Ayres stated a coroner's report
has been made but further information regarding the death has yet to be made public.
Hodges was only 28 at the time of her death, and she was set to appear at Anime

Cassandra Hodges got her start in modeling when she was 16, long before discovering
voice acting. She went to Full Sail Film School in Orlando as a film and sound tech,
and has worked on commercials, runways, and even the Macy's Day Parade around Florida.
She appeared in Adventures in Anime with Jeff Nimoy and Quinton Flynn as her hilarious
self and has appeared and done voice work for independent films. In between her
modeling and voice talent, she somehow has time to be a pet nurse and play lots
of D&D.
Everyone here at RACS is very saddened by this news. She was so young. We have her
family and friends in our thoughts today.

Takeru Sato will play Kenshin Himura, the samurai hero of Nobuhiro Watsuki's popular

here by Viz) in a live-action adaptation being produced by Warner Japan. Himura
is a feared assassin who decides to spend the rest of his life as a wandering samurai
who roams the countryside and protects the weak. The Rurouni Kenshin manga, which
includes 28 volumes, was one of the first titles that Viz Media consolidated for
re-release. The entire series was published in 9 Vizbig volumes that were released
from 2008-2010. Watsuki's samurai saga was also made into a very popular 95-episode

the 1990s by Studio Gallop (episodes 1-66) and Studio Deen (67-95). According to
Variety, production on the film will start in July with a theatrical release slated
for 2012.
In a series of Twitter posts, Aria the Scarlet Ammo (Hidan no Aria) author Chugaku
Akamatsu reported that more Blu-ray Discs and DVDs need to be sold for a second
season to be realized. To that end, he encouraged fans to buy more, or another season
cannot be made. The first home volume for the anime went on sale last week, and
it sold 4,007 Blu-ray Discs and 2,349 DVDs. By contrast, Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko
series director Yukihiro Miyamoto reported that his anime series only needs a little
more support for a second season. The first home video volume sold 5,267 Blu-ray
Discs and 1,361 DVDs during its first week of sales last week.
Najafi, the parent company of the book club Direct Brands, has made a preliminary
agreement to become the "stalking horse" for the American bookstore chain Borders
in an auction later in July. A "stalking horse" agrees to make the starting bid
before an auction begins and can receive compensation if it does not win. As part
of the same agreement, Borders will sell an undetermined number of stores for US$215.1
million cash and US$220 million in assumption of liabilities. According to Borders,
the liquidators, Hilco and Gordon Brothers, have agreed to acquire any stores not
in the sale and close them "in an orderly manner." Bids are due July 17. If Najafi
wins, Borders would be a wholly owned subsidiary of Direct Brands. If Najafi is
outbid for Borders, the requested breakup fee for the chain is US$6.45 million.
Borders reports that if no sales agreement is reached, either with Nafarji or another
company, then Borders has a deal with a joint venture consisting of the liquidators
Hilco and Gordon Brothers, plus SB Capital Group, Tiger Capital Group, and Great
American Group. In this case, Borders's 399 stores would be liquidated. Borders
estimates that its liquidation would bring in US$252 to US$284 million. According
to Publishers Weekly, "A chainwide Going Out of Business/Store Closing sale would
have to take place on or before July 22. However, if a going concern sale is approved
it would take place on or before July 29, and no later than August 5."
Square Enix posted the 10th chapter of the Fractale manga adaptation on its Gangan
Online website on Thursday, even though Yutaka Yamamoto, the director of the original
Fractale anime, had asked for the manga to be discontinued. Yamamoto reported on
his Twitter account last week that he asked the franchise's production committee
to discontinue the manga series. The manga's artist, Mutsumi Akazaki, had written
on her blog earlier that week that she found the work "uninteresting" and added
that she wanted to work on a manga that she enjoyed. After making his request, Yamamoto
noted that the final decision lies with the production committee.
Asako Nishida, the character designer and chief animation director of the ongoing
Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko television anime series, confirmed on Thursday that
an episode will not air due to the earthquake disaster of March 11. According to
Nishida, the anime was originally developed for 13 episodes, but only 12 will end
up airing. Nishida also confirmed that the anime's home video release will include
the unaired 13th episode, as previously revealed in April by retailers.
