It's another happy Friday from RACS World Headquarters!
I'm on travel today so I'm doing the newsletter on my laptop from an 'undisclosed

- in English this time - and I have to say that this is one of the rare times when
I'm liking a series better in English than in the original Japanese. Sentai really
did a great job with it, and I am actually appreciating the little 'Americanizations'
rather than cringing from them.

Updates

It been quite a week over here at RACS World HQ, so let me fill you in.

Last Friday afternoon we received our initial order copies of both the Infinite
Stratos Complete Collection DVD and BD sets [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1109659253317&s=17502&e=0012KffgHZatGb1v10gbow5ilmAvcX44FyThmYkVc2wJBUYa_ykYz3WOR5uFzK8FKcE3VQj_j65D98Zl4gU2CE7pZSCrdjYB3A1ZioY_5RROe1JOXRSi85UGW3-49e_ONzvE3GnHxodjjA=].
When we pre-order titles from a studio we have to take into account the number of
pre-orders we will probably receive, and then how many people will buy one over
the following 3 or 4 weeks once it arrives. Even though we have a lot of statistics
and estimates to go by based on several factors, this process is still more art
than science. Most of the time we do a pretty good job, but we had NO IDEA how popular
Infinite Stratos was going to be. After filling pre-orders Friday, our entire remaining
qnty of the DVD was completely sold out by Saturday, and the BD's had vaporized
by Sunday. I was seen ranting up and down the halls on Monday things like "holy
shit Batman, is there an order that came in over the weekend that DIDN'T have Infinite
Stratos on it???!!!" and "we gotta get more copies in here FAST or we're going to
be in the backorder abyss!!!!" By the time we had finished processing new orders
on Tuesday we had a lot of backorders booked for it, but had also lit a fire down
at Section 23 for more copies. They had more DVD's in the warehouse, and those arrived
yesterday so we have now filled all the backorders for the DVD version and have
it in stock pretty deep. The BD is already back in replication, and won't be back
in stock until next week - we'll get those out as soon as we can.

All in all, pretty impressive for a title that doesn't even street until April 10th.

In new license announcements Sentai picked up the 2nd season of "Phi Brain" (Phi
Brain: Puzzle of God) this week, and also the "Hatsukoi Limited" TV series for
subtitled release on DVD a little later this year. NIS America picked up "Ano Hi
Mita Hana no Namae o Boku-tachi wa Mada Shiranai" which thankfully will be released
under the title "Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day". It's set to be released subtitled
as a BD/DVD combo set in July, and we should have it up for pre-order shortly.

Since I can't go a week without griping about something in the industry...

...Aniplex started posting ads this week for the upcoming 2nd Puella Magi Madoka
Magica DVD and BD [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1109659253317&s=17502&e=0012KffgHZatGZ3T2KdtXLJYfHZiVfxNMi36rmUkCatsvd8JPDnzk3K3XS2ESItsNdgT0a0VDAzRCD8tGV4OCN-WcH4JGWAKDxbv842wxgR77GoobaDcazD5Mmn6ol0AUthlGOv0_XTDZMNSjQOhNLWpg==].
While I understand the play on a theme, I find the command to 'FULFILL YOUR CONTRACT'
portion utterly disturbing, especially coming from them. There is an undertone of
arrogance towards US Anime fans at AniPlex that is just staggering, and is clearly
reflected in this advertising. Not only do they maintain a distribution network
that gives one company in the US a complete monopoly over their releases and then
set ridiculously high minimum prices for their products based on the Japanese model,
they also seem to be suggesting in their advertising that US Anime fans somehow
have an obligation to buy these products at these insane price levels. It's almost
like they think we should 'thank them' for fleecing us so badly on these great shows.

Frankly, we would not even carry their releases if so many of you had not requested
that we do. I wish there was a way we could break their hold on these licenses and
get them out in the marketplace at lower price points. The way AniPlex does it harkens
back to the old Bandai Visual days [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1109659253317&s=17502&e=0012KffgHZatGacCiJ82MfnWsjAxmZK5TBTUbRLgM-6y5l4bdxRXeElaTVX8Rxte_8Eg5f1FaXnXtHEJpYqK8Lm7yAb_YBqETcLoiX3uUw_mT6-VJvzGZ6F1SkATUbli8Oo_p8Z9cHykfuuVYuNh4_Y_QMW7Gdows4R3P4bmSC_WKtk2w9qHC4Su5A-cX_KvGYP4_sJ0iIbi8U=]
and is just bad business. It's clear they have very little respect for US Anime
fans, but do they think we are stupid, brainless zombies? I hope not. ~sigh~

Odds and Sods
The Box Office Mojo website reports that Hiromasa Yonebayashi and Studio Ghibli's
anime film The Secret World of Arrietty (Karigurashi no Arrietty) has earned an
estimated US$140,000 during the March 23-25 weekend, its sixth weekend in American
theaters. Arrietty's theater count dropped by 75 as 229 theaters continued to screen
the film, and the film had a per-screen average of US$611. Ticket sales fell 42.0%
from the fifth weekend. With a current total of US$18,247,000, Arrietty remains
the fourth highest grossing theatrical anime release in the United States (although
not when adjusted for inflation). It is about US$1.5 million below #3's Yu-Gi-Oh!:
The Movie (US$19,765,868).

In a recent interview with IFC Fix, actor Toby Kebbell (RocknRolla, War Horse, The
Conspirator's John Wilkes Booth) not only confirmed the report that he was named
as a candidate to play Tetsuo in the currently halted live-action adaptation of
Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira manga, but also gave his thoughts on the series, explaining
how he disagreed with creative choices made with regards to the adaptation process.
In the interview, Kebbell states that when he was approached with the role, he mentioned
that he had read the entire manga in the past, and suggested that the manga's six
volumes be adapted into as many as three films, so that "my [Kebbell's] character,
Tetsuo, is not the lead [...] He's not the second lead, and he's not the third or
the fourth lead, because there are eight major characters there. You've got great
young actors, and you could get them in there. That's the way to do it if you want
to do sequels." He also noted that the studio's reaction to his suggestion was not
particularly positive, which caused him to reply that if their plans were to create
a live-action remake of the anime, he was not interested, because "[the anime adaptation]
is perfect and you're not going to do it dark enough - so therefore, I don't want
to do it." Kebbell also expressed his anger at some of the other creative choices
that were to be made in the adaptation, such as the decision to make two of the
lead characters of the film, Tetsuo and Kanada, into brothers. He said that his
reaction to hearing this was to tell the producers, "The point is that Tetsuo can't
comprehend how someone who isn't his brother could love him so much - and that's
where his wrath and his rage come from. Do you not see that? Why have you made
them brothers? What the [f--k] are you doing?" Though the live-action Akira project

The SankeiBiz news website posted an article about the phenomenon of the virtual
idol Hatsune Miku from a business perspective on Tuesday, and in the article noted
that the idol has generated more than 10 billion yen (about US$120.28 million) in
revenue since she was first introduced five years ago. The article added that a
consultant from the Nomura Research Institute had arrived at that number after some
preliminary calculations. The website noted that it was the social and crowdsourcing
nature of the Vocaloid software that contributed to the popularity of Hatsune Miku,
as fans can use the software to create their own songs and post them on social websites
like Nico Nico Douga. The software then also helps to support amateur artists and
their works. The article noted that different revenue streams for the Hatsune Miku
franchise include the voice software itself, video game titles, manga adaptations,
public performances, live online broadcasts, songs featured in karaoke chain stores,
CDs, DVDs of performances, collaborations with the Sapporo Snow Festival, and miscellaneous
merchandise. So far, Sega has released four video games featuring Hatsune Miku,
and the video games have shipped a total of more than 1 million copies. In addition,
the Hatsune Miku commercial project for the Toyota Corolla and the Google Chrome
commercial featuring Hatsune Miku also contributed to the franchise's rising popularity
and additional revenue. The song used for the Google Chrome commercial, "'Tell Your
World," was released as a single on March 14 and sold 33,000 copies its first week
to rank at #4 on Oricon's album rankings chart.
Miku has gone for an experiment to become a major social trend in Japan. In public
she drives a Toyota, but I still think here other car is a Benz... -_^
Kamala Films has acquired rights to the Lone Wolf and Cub manga, which is now in
active development again according to Deadline. Kamala will produce with 1212
Entertainment, and there are some major league attachments. David and Janet Peoples
(Blade Runner, Unforgiven, and Twelve Monkeys) are writing a script; and Justin
Lin (Fast Five) is attached to direct. Darren Aronofsky was attached to direct a
Lone Wolf and Cub feature almost ten years ago; perhaps this time around a film,
set in the Edo period in Japan, can get made. Dark Horse Comics publishes the manga
series here in the U.S.
I really hope they make this one. I have been a Lone Wolf fan since before I can
remember.
Takahiro Sato, the producer for the live-action Gantz films based on Hiroya Oku's
manga, has stated that he plans to give away major props from the films during the
Friday Roadshow television broadcasts of Gantz and Gantz: Perfect Answer on April
20 and 27, respectively. He added that if individuals who could "display them with
care" could be found, he would like to give away the Gantz sphere used in the film,
which measures 1.25 meters (about 4.1 feet) in diameter, as well as the props used
for the Tanaka Alien and Senjukannon enemies. More details for the giveaway are
planned to be announced during the April broadcasts.

Hi Bob! I know from time to time you feature interesting and worthy non anime stories
in your blog. I recently came across a story that was featured on an episode of
"Must Love Cats" on Animal Planet. It was about a group of Americans living in Japan
that have taken on the challenge to rescue Cats & Dog s left behind when the families
evacuated from the area around the Fukushima radiation zone. They drive into the
radiation zone every day to try and trap and rescue the abandoned and when they
can't catch them at least make sure they do not starve to death by setting up feeding
stations. They have set up their rescue operation as the Japan Cat Network. 1 year
in and still a lot of work to do.
