May at last! Spring is in the air, and that also means the big bloom is wreaking

It's been a pretty slow news week, but I still have a couple of items that might
be of interest, so lets get started!

Media Blasters, so we are all up to date with them again - for now. :-)

NIS updated us on the progress of the last pressing of the Wagnaria!! (Working!!)

pre-processing all those so everything can ship that same day the sets hit our
dock.

Sentai Picks Up Kobato

Sentai Filmworks (Section 23) announced at its Kawaii Kon panel on Saturday that
it acquired the Kobato anime series, and said they plan to have it ready for release
in August. The anime ran for 24 episodes from 2009 to 2010.
Kobato
Kobato is a girl who came to earth to fulfill her wish, which is to go to a certain
place. To fulfill that wish, she has to find a bottle and fill it with scarred hearts.
Together with her "teacher", which is a stuffed animal, she search for the scarred
hearts. However she may not fall in love with any person whom she cures the heart
of.

State of the Industry - The Borders Bankruptcy & Manga Output

From the Manga economatrix this week:
"The retail book chain Borders lost US$300 million over its fiscal 2010 year, which
ended on January 29, 2011, and it has continued to lose money since filing for bankruptcy
on February 16. In its first month of the fiscal 2011 year (January 30 to February
26), Borders lost US$28.3 million; that loss was only slightly lower in the first
full month after the bankruptcy filing: US$24.3 million.
The Publishers Weekly industry news source attributes some of these difficulties
to publishers' unwillingness to work with Borders "on anything close to normal
business terms," forcing the chain to pay for stock in cash rather than credit.
ICv2 calls regaining credit from publishers is the chain's "most formidable task,"
although the company claimed in its report that its forecasts indicate that Borders
has the cash it will need to carry it through the end of its fiscal 2011.
Borders delayed payments to publishers this past January, and delayed more in February,
prior to its bankruptcy filing. Publishers then became weary of dealing with Borders,
and Diamond Comics Distributors' Diamond Books distribution arm, which handles graphic
novel distribution in bookstores for manga publishers Bandai Entertainment, Dark
Horse Comics, Digital Manga Publishing, Udon Entertainment, and Yaoi Press, put
all Borders orders on hold."

These little companies just can't absorb those kind of losses. I think the effect
on the remaining manga publishers will be more profound going forward than we realize,
manifesting as fewer reprints, fewer new licenses and even more selective licensing
practices, lower monthly manga output, and shorter 'in stock' shelf lives of existing
manga volumes. In fact, we're already seeing this happening. Peak annual manga output,
back in 2005-2006 I think, was around 1,700 volumes. Post Borders, we'll probably
see output go to around 400-500 annual volumes before the market stabilizes. I hope
it doesn't fall any further than that.

Odd's and Sod's

Movie distributor Eleven Arts confirmed on Tuesday that it is partnering with FUNimation
Entertainment to release the anime film Trigun: Badlands Rumble in summer 2011.
Funimation has confirmed that some theaters will show an English-dubbed version
of the film, while others will show the film with the original Japanese track. The
company also said that the official Funimation Trigun website [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=hjzho5bab&et=1105427772580&s=17502&e=00159wPqji5rqmWP0AJBIm7rnqyJCoFQpfK7Zb7z4cvpUKXcGfYiT5dHBXEK8dyzHyA-7GzVUd2Nkaq_DigZ38Wqs6TCT1WjIZk7R0SbpCDBxrAkACbyh6CFFVDdq-55QSB]will
be updated with the screening schedule "soon." Funimation originally indicated its

reports that the North American original boys-love comics publisher Yaoi Press has
had both manga and prose fiction removed from the store, and that publisher Yamila
Abraham stated that the company will alter its works for sale on the Kindle device.
A Digital Manga Publishing representative said they have no plans to alter content
in order to comply with Amazon's policies, and commented that "Amazon does sell
the print editions of these titles, which seems to make [removing the e-book versions]
a contradiction to their business practice."
The digital police are coming folks... and good for DMP for not caving! Damn Kindle
versions are often more expensive than the print ones anyway...
AnimeOnDVD founder Chris Beveridge announced that he is leaving the Mania.com entertainment
news and community website. He later revealed that he will continue writing about
anime and other popular culture topics at Fandom Post, an independent website he
recently launched. Beveridge launched AnimeOnDVD in 1998, and he sold the website
to Mania.com in 2008. As a side note, Mania will probably not be offering me the
job to run their Anime tab. I'm not as good at writing rosy reviews for things
that I actually don't like in order to help someone sell advertising...
And finally, Koe-Bu, a Japanese online community for voice-acting and narrating
