From Jacci Howard Bear, your Guide to Desktop Publishing
In keeping with our typography theme this month, I have fonts for you this week. They are nice OpenType fonts, often with alternate glyphs, and all free for commercial use too. And while you're trying out these fonts, why not explore the world of numbers -- specifically number styles. Browse the rest of the links in this newsletter for tips, tips, and more tips on a wide range of topics.

And for the iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch crowd, another fun (but this time very educational) game app. Check out my review of The Font Game from I Love Typography. Learning IS fun.

Coming up later on in the month of May: More free fonts, helpful abbreviations, a look at handwriting styles (and matching fonts), and more type-related tutorials.

Typesetting Numbers
There's a good chance you may know about Old Style and Lining Figures (if not, this tutorial will give you examples and definitions) but are you familiar with the differences between Proportional and Tabular figures? And, do you know the best way to use all four number styles? In this tutorial we're defining, designing, and explaining how to access the OpenType Number forms in some Adobe, Microsoft, and Serif software. Read Typesetting Numbers.

Get This Free Font: Matilde and Matilde Sketch
In addition to a pair of nice fonts full of letters you'll get some frames and patterns to build designs around. I did a "semi-punny book cover" with Matilde and a free vector image from All Vectors. Get Matilde and Matilde Sketch

Get This Free Font: Metropolis 1920
I really enjoyed playing with this a-mazing font. You could make some nifty logos or monograms with some of the letters. Be sure to check out the poster I made with it. Get Metropolis 1920

Get This Free Font: Bispo
The first font I featured this month, it's a lovely italic chancery calligraphy font. Very pretty and I like the swashes available as alternate characters. Get Bispo
