It's another happy Friday from RACS World Headquarters!
Memorial Day Weekend is upon us, and with it the official start of Summer. We'll

Funimation sent over a short list of date bumps last Friday, which looks to be an
effect of them try to round out the late June / early July schedule a little better.

Is There Hope for Some of TokyoPop's Former Licenses?

Section 23 Picks Up Amagami SS and MM!

Section 23 announced at their Anime Central panel this weekend that they have acquired
Amagami SS and the MM! TV anime series, which they intend to release this September.
Amagami SS is based on the PlayStation 2 romance simulation game Amagami by Enterbrain

A second-year high school boy finds himself uneasy during Christmas time due to
an experience in the past. However, this year at Christmas, he gets his last chance
to ask out a graduating female senior named Haruka Morishima - or one of several
other classmates. The story of the anime will be arranged in an omnibus format,
with each heroine getting her own version of the story animated. Each heroine will
sing her own version of the ending theme song.

The story centers the life of Taro Sado going through high school. He came to realize
his masochist personality and attempts to conceal this from his crush. To fix it,
he enrolled in his school's "2nd Volunteer Club".

Funimation Picks Up FMA: Star of Milos film / Is this a Zombie?

Funimation announced at their Anime Central panel this weekend that they have acquired
of the upcoming Fullmetal Alchemist movie: The Sacred Star of Milos (Fullmetal Alchemist:
Milos no Sei-Naru Hoshi) and Is This A Zombie? (Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?)
Fullmetal Alchemist: Star of Milos is set to open in Japan on July 2, and is a stand-alone
story and not part of the original or "Brotherhood" storylines.

Aikawa Ayumu is a normal high school boy. One day he is killed by a serial killer
and revived as a zombie by a necromancer named Eucliwood Hellscythe. He starts to
serve Eu as her guard but he happens to deprive the mahou shoujo Haruna of her magic
power. Haruna orders Ayumu to fight against the anti-mahou shoujo system "Megalo"
in her place.

State of the Industry - Hope for Some of TokyoPop's Former Licenses?

reporting that (per TokyoPop's facebook page) all of former TokyoPop's international
manga licenses will immediately revert back to their original owners, rather
than being held by the company's remaining media division until the contracts
expire. Probably because they have told the license holders that no further
royalty payments will be forthcoming for those series.
This will, at the very least, give other interested publishers the opportunity
to license series formerly published by TokyoPop without having to wait for
TP's licenses to expire.
The status of original indigenous series TokyoPop held is still a little murky.
Writers like Becky Cloonan (whose East Coast Rising comic was published through
Tokyopop's "Global Manga" program), blogger Johanna Draper-Carlson, and blogger
and comic creator Jason Thompson, have expressed concern over the status of their
series since TokyoPop technically still owns to rights to them.
Publisher Digital Manga (DMP) has said on thier Twitter account this week that
they are looking into the possibility of rescuing some of Tokyopop's former
titles. DMP publishes mostly Shonen Ai and Yaoi manga here in the North America,
and it's not clear if DMP is looking at all of TokyoPop's former licenses, or
only the series formerly published under TP's BLU label.

Also, a follow up to my article last week regarding Tokyo's new far reaching restrictions
on adult manga titles. Here's what I wrote:
"So while straight forward on the surface, these sorts of regulations tend to
be more far reaching than we initially imagine as creators consciously start to
shift their efforts to create works that are more likely to comply with the law.

of what a court would now consider 'obscene' material was too broad to safely be
able to produce such publications. That single incident effectively ended an industry.
Regardless of how you feel about erotic manga, laws that proport to 'protect' us
- especially ones meant to protect us from ourselves - usually end up doing far
more damage to our freedoms that we initially imagine."

ban on certain manga in Tokyo (meaning all of Japan, of course), you commented
that no licensed adult manga have been released in the US for about a year. In fact,
Eros has released three volumes. "Too Hot to Handle," which you carry, plus "Love
Selection" and "Love and Hate," which you don't. We are just being very, very careful
about content. (We pulled several titles out of pre-production.) Of course, no matter
how careful you are, there is no guarantee, but we are continuing to take the chance
with carefully selected titles. We just completed a new TPB, "A Strange Kind of
Woman Volume 1" and it will be solicited soon."

over a year. -_^ That has now been corrected with both titles in our catalog and
now in stock. It's good to see someone is still trying to keep publishing, and

Odd's and Sod's

Manga creators Sensha Yoshida (Utsurun Desu.) and Kotobuki Shiriagari (AX, Jacaranda)
gave volunteer art lessons at the Higashi Middle School in the city of Kamaishi
in tsunami-devastated Iwate Prefecture on Thursday. The artists came to help cheer
up the students after the March 11 earthquake disaster. The school's entire student
body, which has almost 180 students, attended the classes taught by Yoshida, Shiragari,
and about 15 editors. About 70 percent of the students in the school had their homes
damaged in the disaster, and about half of the students still commute to school
from refuge shelters. Nevertheless, the school resumed classes in April.
Troubled book retail chain Borders lost US$132 million over the month of April.
Of this amount, US$32 million was lost from the company's ongoing operations, with
its reorganization costs adding up to the additional US$100 million. In March, the
company lost US$23 million in its ongoing operations. Borders' recently requested
a 120-day extension to solidify its reorganization plans. I think we are looking
at another Circuit City here...
Masaru Kato, the executive vice-president and chief financial officer of Sony, confirmed
on Thursday that his company is working on a "future platform" after the PlayStation
3 (PS3) console. In a conference call to investors today, he gave the following
statement to explain the company's higher research-and-development budget: "For
the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life, but this is a platform business,
so for the future platform - when we'll be introducing what product I cannot discuss
that - but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred
there." Sony has been having trouble restoring its PLAYSTATION Network service for
the PS3 after the subscribers' personal information were compromised last month
due to fundamental security flaws. As of Thursday, the network is still offline
in Japan.
And finally, Craigslist is hosting two ads from from Tokyopop, which is in the process
of shutting down its North American publishing division in Los Angeles. Tokyopop
has confirmed with ANN that the posts are legitimate. The ads are for the sale
of two lighted signs, both featuring Tokypop's name and "robofish" logo on metal.
Neither sign has a fixed price and will be sold to the highest bidder; both ads
also note that the buyer will have to bring their own tools to Tokyopop's office
and take the signs down themselves. Additionally, both signs "must go this week,"
presumably because Tokyopop's publishing division will officially shut down on May
31.
